Hydrogen energy today is proving to be an ideal alternative to fossil fuels because of its versatile applications. However, generating and utilizing hydrogen as a fuel requires huge investments pertaining to critical infrastructures. Green hydrogen stands for producing hydrogen by water splitting technique utilizing renewable sources of energy. Hydrogen produced by this technique is in the purest form and can be subsequently converted into electricity using a fuel cell. Oxygen is a byproduct of water electrolysis, which can be utilized in medical and chemical industries. Today, only 4% of total global hydrogen production is via electrolysis using renewable energy sources. This is due to the economic factors associated with utilizing renewable energy sources. This trend is going to change as most of the European countries as per the European Energy Directive are covering 14% of their energy requirements by renewable energy sources.
